The Black River Gorges National park is the biggest rainforest you will find on the island. There are several hiking trails that will take you through the park for all levels of fitness. Entrance to the park is free! The climate here is different than on the beach. There is more chance of rain and the humidity is higher, so typical tropical climate. When my taxi driver dropped me off at the entrance he asked if I needed an umbrella. I told him that wasn’t necessary, and he told me I could use it as a walking stick. I was really happy I took the umbrella with me because some parts were really slippery and steep!
The white stripes you see in the pictures are big waterfalls in the distance!
If you want to do an easy trail there are several options that will take you to some amazing viewpoints! The paths are in good condition, but you will find more tourists on the easy trails. The more advanced trails will take you through the dense forest. This is the trail I did, and the whole trail I came across nobody. I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere all by myself, and I liked it! Check out this website to see which trail you want to do.
I hired a taxi driver from https://www.taxismauritius.com/ who took me to the entrance of the park and waited there untill I finished the hike. After the hike he brought me back to my appartment in Flic & Flac, I paid €70 for the whole day.
2. Eau Bleu Waterfalls
Located near the village of Cluny you will find some amazing waterfalls with clear blue water. Most people only know the main waterfall, but there are actually 6 waterfalls. They are harder to reach, but are definitely worth visiting and you’ll probably have them all to yourself! Here is a guide on how to reach the waterfalls.
Here I also used a taxi to get me to the waterfalls. The driver waited for me while I took my time to explore the area. Actually, he also went to explore because he never visited the place. I paid €70 for the whole trip, from Flic & Flac to Eau Bleu and back.
Big chance you will see some monkeys here! When I was chilling on top of the main waterfall there where a lot of monkeys who came to take a look.
